Enemies |
"If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all people", Romans 12:18.
My pushback against technical fallacies has recently been categorized by forums as confrontation with individuals. This is a perfect example of where we are as a society, when disagreement over ideas is conflated with attacks on the person. Used to be an ad hominem reply was universally recognized as subversive and meritless and disdained as coming from a weak position in the debate. Now it seems no one considers them abusive. Personal attacks are unintelligent and dehumaizing. It's not what I do. Yet, some do them to me.
One thing a person learns as they get older is at some point you have to give up worrying about why people choose to be your enemies. You have to let it go. That perspective may look like apathy or arrogance or indifference. But it's actually none of those things. It's simply wisdom. And healthy. Some folks are going to hate you for very petty reasons or for no reason at all. And there is nothing you can do about it. Maybe they say they'll stop if you do this or that. But that's a trap; it's not real. In reality, after doing that thing, then two people will be upset with you, and one of them will be yourself. Because haters want to hate, and they have no intention of changing.
The powersports industry teems with very emotionally needy people. Compared with the auto industry powersports is historically immature and lacks technical credibility. Thus needy, insecure motorcycle folks exercise their angst mostly through communicating their incompetence, with the result that objective qualified knowledge is villified and becomes the "killing field", the arena of battle. They react when confronted with it. Intersection with a large number of touchy folks in motorcycling is therefore an unfortunate given. It is very easy to accumulate enemies. One can only sigh and move on, grateful to God for the many wonderful powersports clients and friends one is blessed to have.
