YouTube videos |
Hopefully, you know better than to rely on YouTube videos. There is no vetting of these things. Anyone with a camera can do this. They're well-meaning I'm sure, but competence counts. Have you noticed how many of these posters say things like, "I don't know how this is supposed to come apart", or, "I'm not sure where this goes", or, "Hmm, that's interesting"? Don't put any faith in videos in which the individual beats on things or uses Vise-Grips, adjustable wrenches, pries with screwdrivers, insists that the factory got something wrong, or demonstrably is trying to "make do" without the required special tools. Even if they are popular and have fifty videos--a hundred videos. Or their channel is inviting and has a catchy name. Or they have fair to excellent demonstation, light, videoing and editing skills--which many in fact do. Ask a professional mechanic to view it. Realize you aren't watching mechanic's courses. In the absense of industry credentials, it's just a guy in his garage. Remember that. The posters are amateurs. Not only do they rarely even know the bike they're working on, most exhibit incredibly awful working habits and astonishingly little common sense. Ninegy percent of this stuff is garbage. |
