® Lookie-loos

A certain percentage of the people who contact me for carb rebuilding are "lookie-loos". They don't want to learn about their bikes. They're not ready to accept that fifty year old Hondas invariably need a lot more than just carburetor work. They have taken the path of least resistance in removing their carburetors and aren't about to be deflected. It's carburetors or nothing. Full speed ahead.

Lookie-loos have undoubtedly affected my word-of-mouth reputation. They probably think I am unfriendly, uncaring, even incompetent. But the truth is I have learned to recognize ahead of time those potential customers who satisfying will potentially be very dufficult. I try to educate them, hoping they'll listen and we can avoid starting on the wrong foot so to speak. But lookie-loos have their agenda. They know what they want and can't be disuaded. I try to use gentle language, encouraging them to get the whole bike looked at not just the carburetors, referring to a good mechanic as I have stopped taking in bikes. But often they don't get it. Such is the way with lookie-loos.
