® The less/more air test

In another example of the disconnect between the public and the powersports repair industry, I found it difficult to convince someone today to do the less/more air test. For the price of a piece of duct tape, this individual could have got to the bottom of their issue much sooner than they did.

Eventually they did the test, and found that the air filter housing had a crack in it, and this was causing the bike to not rev up. They were so surprised that an air leak seemingly so small could make that much difference. It occurs to me that the riding public still does not understand how carefully balanced their Honda intake system is. How close to optimum the air quantity is in the standard configuration. This is why the test works so well, and it explains a few other things.

For example, it explains why what seem to most people to be tiny changes in their intake system--aftermarket air filters, missing airbox covers, lack of air filter maintenance--result in very projounced engine performance issues.
