® Forums part 12: Forum hubris
A twelve-part series

Forums. Most people don't realize. See my other articles. You might think I obsess. But that may be because you are new to the powersports world and not cognizant of how utterly different the two worlds are. Or maybe you do. At any rate, here is a brief summary.

  • They posture themselves as vintage Honda arbiters, that is, centers of reliable information--more than that, the sole source of advice that is of such value as to be beyond criticism. Sadly, forum visitors believe it too and that is the gravest, nearly criminal atrocity.

  • They present themselves as smarter than Honda, as if they are in the position to judge where the company has erred or misstepped, and the fifty-plus years' interim since these bikes were manufactured has only reinforced them in this hubris.

  • They promote the aftermarket parts world as a thing unquestionably suitable for and advantageous to maintaining vintage Hondas, showing a glaring, obvious, and dangerous ignorance of the nature of the powersports industry.

  • They purpose to dismiss Honda lierature, technique, even the company's culture and systems--it seems they think they themselves manufactured these bikes, not the world's largest and most successful motorcycle company.

  • They presume their ideas, modifications, and ad-hoc maintenance solutions to be superior to Honda manufacturing design and specification, and "dis" anyone who does not conform to this delusion.
