Buell engine video |

The Buell 1190 engine assembly video. Click on it to view. Over two hours long, and a treat if you like engines and especially if you like assembling engines and seeing how this small manufacturer does it. Note the workstations, the numerous special fixtures and tools (including some developed by the techs themselves), the accountability checks and documentation, the use of Redline synthetic assembly lube and large and small torque wrenches, the pre-prepared engine sub assemblies, degreeing the cams, the absence of power tools, the cylinder compression test and starter current draw tests, and the surprisingly young ages of the assemblers and the engagement and commitment they appear to bring to the process.
The first part of the assembly, the crankcase halves, is especially interesting. Look at how many parts have to be added to the bare case castings! This illustrates the engineering that goes into a modern engine. A vintage Honda four cylinder is nothing like this!
Whatever your preference, v-twins or fours, and cruiser, tourer, adventure or sport, you have to admire the diligence, engineering and motivation evident in this video. You might also be interested in the interview of Erik Buell found here. Also, the company's YouTube channel containing many videos of the team and their insights, is found here. And a very quick "assembled by hand" ethos video here.

There was also an interesting book on the company's history produced. It's unfortunately out of print and ebay and other sources are taking advantage... But it is collectable and if anything like the interview, it should be fascinating. Erik Buell, the bike's originator and namesake, now disassociated from the product, is enjoying a second career in as a musician. A kind of video summary of some of the things from the interview and the book can be found here. |
