Battery bolts |
Here is another item from the "forums don't know sh**" folder. Powersports battery bolts. How can there be anything significant about a battery terminal bolt, you ask? Well, career mechanics can tell you. I offer two facts for your consideration.
First, experienced, conscientious, professional mechanics know that although these bolts usually have screwdriver-enabled features, they should never be tightened with a screwdriver. Start them with one, sure. But a motorcycle battery's terminals should always be tightened with a wrench. Snugly, not reefing on it. Literally every streetbike out there is vulnerable to having its battery cables be less tight than is optimum.
The other thing is even less understood by non-professionals. That is, that the battery bolts you use should be the tin-coated brass ones, not the ones made of steel that often come on aftermarket batteries. This is especially critical in regard to vintage bikes lacking computerized monitoring systems. The factory Honda battery bolts of the 1970s were the brass ones designed to act as safety fuses in the event of a severe battery terminal short or a stuck starting solenoid. A small thing, seemingly, this bolt. But they can make an important difference. The brass ones are the those I still prefer today when I can find them.
