The artless dodger |
|
Having heard someone present themselves in this way has aroused much thought. They used "artless" in the sense of guileless, uncomplicated and transparent, with The "dodger" part assigned the more philosophical, quieter life. I can identify with both, finding that I prefer to live less full of myself and more content. It is of course a play on the original phrase, "artful dodger", the sobriquet coined by Charles Dickens in Oliver Twist, the 1830s novel in which he describes a pickpocketing street urchin who nimbly evades the law. |
