Motorcycles have become very computerized. Riding a 70s Honda and having taught modern motorcycle mechanics, the juxtaposition is natural. And amazing. Even stark. In a previous era we knew only mechanical igition advance, breaker points, incandescent lights, a single fuse, too little power to hurt you, a choke, 18 gauge wire, manually cancelled turnsignals, and leaky, recalcitrant carburetors. Now it's computers, sensors, autonomous risk management, multiple fuses and relays, seamless warmup and throttle, CAN bus, event recorders, and more marvels surprising and unending. Things eminently analog, like our Vietnam era, pre-immobilizer, pre-Internet Hondas, are receding into the horizon. |
