® Mechanics and others

I was reminded this morning as I watched a YouTube video in which a person gripped a spark plug with Channelock pliers. It may seem odd to you, but that makes me shudder in the same way others are irritated by the classic fingernails on chalkboard. I get it that many folks do not have this mechanical sensitivity. But these are usually people who have no connection with motor vehicles. When I observe on powersports venues the use of pliers on nuts I cringe. When I see even Honda in their manuals promoting pliers gripping carburetor float pivot pins, I shake my head. And adjustable wrenches--don't get me started. A pro mechanic's adjustable wrench will never wear out because he rarely uses it. It's always his last option, even for axle nuts. And, gasp, no formally trained mechanic will ever use an adjustable wrench to turn an expensive, high-torque part such as a crankshaft! And when the ubiquitous "Crescent" wrench is used, the experienced mechanic will make sure the load is against the fixed jaw, not the moveable one. These are all things career mechanics take for granted. They're second nature. And if in the professional environment of a repair shop this is the ethos, why does the powersports online media ignore it?
