Note the 30-year span of exclusivity. Also, it is interesting that Honda jumped the gun on the VIN system. The government made it available in 1980 so Honda and others took advantage of that despite it not being mandatory until the 1981 model year. They started in 1980 on some of their bikes. Honda also, even before that, borrowed from the VIN system to designate certain models with letter tags, much the way Yamaha did, without actually using the VIN system. For example, Honda called some 1979 (and even a few 1978) models "Z" bikes, in a way borrowing colloquially from the VIN system though that designation is not correct VIN-wise (if it were, a 1979 model would have bren a "9", not a "Z").
