Beyond the pale
A pale is an ancient name for a pointed stake driven into the ground (our modern words pole and impale are derivitives), and by extension, a fence or boundary. The meaning of this prosaic phrase in the figurative sense came to be "the area that is enclosed and safe." The modern phrases, "Thinking outside the box" and "Getting out of your comfort zone" are similar but distinctly more clinical and less musical.
